Southern Maine School of Scottish Dance

Class attire:

• Suggested dancewear includes leotards and/or tank tops and dance shorts (such as Soffe brand).  Please, no loose-fitting, baggy clothing. 
• Students should wear ghillies (see side bar) or ballet slippers. 
• All students should wear knee-high socks.  When competing and performing, dancers wear knee-high socks, so wearing them in class makes it more comfortable in competition.
• Students should have their hair pulled back and should avoid wearing distracting jewelry.

• Students should be fully dressed and ready to go at the start of class time.  Class will start promptly on time and students will miss valuable warm-up time if they are late.
• Students should bring their own water bottles and will be encouraged to stay well-hydrated throughout class.  
• Regular attendance is important for a dancer’s success. If you are unable to attend a class, please inform the studio. Missed classes are non-refundable. A dancer may attend a class of similar curriculum for a make-up option.
• After learning a dance or a step, the dancer is expected to practice at home so that it can be reviewed, not re-taught at a later lesson.

Ghillies (pronounced "gilleys") are the black leather dance shoes worn by Scottish dancers and they are different from ballet or jazz shoes.  Beginner dancers may wear ballet shoes if preferred until they begin competing.  Ghillies can be ordered online or they can be purchased at a Highland Games.  When ordering ghillies please follow size ordering directions closely as proper fit is very important.  Make sure you get Scottish ghillies, not Irish.  See the Resources page for online ghillie vendors.
